This medication is classified as a 5 alpha reductase inhibitor and its mechanism of action is stopping testosterone from being converted into the androgen known as DHT.
The enlargement of the prostate gland and subsequent symptoms which occur (frequent urination or a weak stream of urine) are caused by DHT. By preventing the enzyme called 5 alpha reductase from triggering the conversion of testosterone to DHT, this medicine helps the prostate to shrink. This stops the prostate gland from pressing against the bladder, providing relief from urinary symptoms. As a result of this, urinary retention can be prevented and surgery for BHP may be avoided.

Dosage and Administration
Dutas (Dutasteride) is provided in the form of capsules, and the medicine content of each one is 0.5mg. Adult men treating BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) are usually directed by their physician to administer 0.5mg (equal to one capsule) per day. In some cases, up to 6 months of treatment may be needed before an improvement in symptoms is noticed. It is important not to exceed the dosage recommended by your physician.
